As we observe Hypertension Month and approach World Hypertension Day, the St. Lucia Diabetes and Hypertension Association (SLDHA) urges all citizens to take their health seriously and become aware of the silent risk of high blood pressure; a condition that, if left unchecked, can lead to heart attacks, strokes, kidney damage, and even death.
Hypertension, often called the “silent killer,” frequently presents no warning signs. However, in some cases, symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, shortness of breath, chest pain, or blurred vision may occur. By the time symptoms appear, damage may already be underway.
We encourage everyone to take proactive steps:
Schedule regular check-ups with your physician or visit your nearest primary care facility.
Monitor your blood pressure regularly, especially if you have a family history of hypertension or other risk factors.
Adopt a healthy lifestyle:- eat balanced meals, stay physically active, reduce salt and alcohol intake, and avoid smoking.
Get adequate rest, manage stress, and prioritize mental well-being.
Most importantly, stay informed. Knowledge is power; being aware of your health status is the first step toward prevention and control.
This month, we extend our heartfelt wishes to our members and the entire St. Lucian community. May we all work together in the fight against hypertension.
Be informed. Get checked. Stay healthy.
